Whatever they are called, machine data is the least exploited and least valued asset of an organization. But they hide some of the most important information that can be acquired, both at the IT level and for the entire company: where problems have occurred, how to optimize the user experience, the traces left by fraudulent activities. All this information can be identified in the machine data generated by the normal activity of the organization.
Machine data is valuable because it contains a definitive record of all activities and behaviors of customers, users, transactions, applications, servers, networks and mobile devices. They include configuration data, API data, message queues, change events, diagnostic command outputs, traffic tags and sensor data generated by industrial systems, and much more.
The challenge inherent in the exploitation of machine data is represented by the fact that they constitute a confused jumble of unpredictable formats. Traditional monitoring and analysis tools were not designed for the variety, speed, volumes and variability that these data present.
